Olive Drab Chromate Concentrate

OLIVE DRAB CHROMATE CONCENTRATE Makes 7.6 litres

Caswell Olive Drab Chromate will impart a heavy, non-iridescent olive drab green coating over zinc or cadmium deposits. The finish also serves as an excellent base for paint.

MIXING:

DO NOT USE OLIVE DRAB CHROMATE AT FULL STRENGTH. DO NOT PRE-MIX PART I AND PART II. A VIOLENT REACTION MAY OCCUR.

In a plastic tank (HDPE preferred) add 7.6 litres of distilled water.

Add 8 fl oz [ All of supplied container, 250 ml ] Olive Drab Part I and mix with a plastic mixer
Add 8 fl oz [ All of supplied container, 250 ml ] Olive Drab Part II and mix with a plastic mixer

Solution is now ready for use. Use at 70-90 deg F. If heating use Stainless Steel heaters (No Titanium) Air agitation recommended but not required.

OPERATION:

Zinc or cadmium plate the part

Rinse with distilled water
Dip in a 5% solution of muriatic or hydrochloric acid for 5 secs (not required but recommended)
Rinse with distilled water
Dip in Olive Drab Chromate for 15-60 seconds
Rinse with distilled water
Dry with warm air not exceeding 160 deg F.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Bronze to reddish color	Temperature too high	Lower Temperature
Olive color too iridescent	Solution too weak	Evaporate off some water
Dull powdery film, not adhering	Rinse of air drying too hot	Adjust to 50 deg C or less
Poor corrosion resistance	Temp. of drying is over 71 deg C. Leaches out chromate	Reduce temperature Reduce temperature
Poor dye absorption	Immersion time in dye too short Dye temperature too low Chromate film too thin	Increase immersion time Increase temperature Increase dip time
Chromate wipes off	Can occur is the concentration is low or high, most commonly high	Immerse the part in the yellow chromate for 10 seconds with mild agitation. If the chromate wipes off, add 0.5% by volume chromate and retest. If the wipe off is still evident, increase the immersion time to 20 seconds
