Copper Blackener EBONOL C-50
Ebonol C-50 is a liquid concentrate which, when diluted with water, produces decorative oxide finishes on copper and copper alloys. The Ebonol C-50 process is capable of producing various shades of brown on copper, including a statuary bronze colour. However, the process is particularly effective on brass where attractive brown colours, such as Antique Brass and English Bronze, can be developed.
Ebonol C-50 coating has little corrosion resistance and is used primarily for decorative purposes on items such as builder’s hardware and lamps.
Ebonol C-50 is supplied as a liquid concentrate.
COLOUR FORMATION
Colour formation is dependent upon the time of immersion and the concentration of the solution.
The longer the immersion time, the darker the colour produced; the more concentrated the solution (e.g., 1 part Ebonol c-50 to 3 parts water) the faster the formation of a dark coating.
Medium shades of brown are produced in 30 seconds.
Some experimentation should be performed to determine the immersion time necessary to produce the specific colour required.
OPERATION
Parts should be clean when immersed in the Ebonol C-50 solution.
Copper or brass parts are simply immersed in the Ebonol C-50 solutions for the length of time required to produce the desired colour.
Processing times are not extremely critical and the desired colour of the coating can be achieved consistently in production.
Parts should be thoroughly rinsed and dried after removal from the Ebonol C-50 solution.
It is recommended that a clear, protective lacquer be applied to the coating to provide maximum service life.
CONTROL
No analytical control of the Ebonol C-50 is required.
When the time required to produce the desired colour increases, add 5% by volume of the Ebonol C-50 liquid concentrate.
When additions of the liquid concentrate fail to increase the rate of colour formation, the bath should be discarded and replaced with a fresh bath.
CAUTION:
EXHAUST VENILATION MUST BE PROVIDED TO REMOVE TOXIC FUMES FROM THE EBONOL C-50 SOLUTION.
DO NOT ALLOW THE EBONOL C-50 SOLUTION TO COME IN CONTACT WITH ACIDS OR STRONG OXIDISING AGENTS AS SUCH CONTACT MAY PRODUCE TOXIC FUMES.
AVOID CONTACT OF THE EBONOL C-50 LIQUID CONCENTRATE AND ITS SOLUTIONS WITH THE SKIN OR EYES.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, GLOVES AND FACE SHIELD SHOULD BE WORN BY THE OPERATOR.
IN CASE OF CONTACT FLUSH SKIN OR EYES WITH PLENTY OF COLD WATER; FOR EYES, OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION.
